I rose to the challenge this year and ran 6 miles for Sport Relief. Why??

Well, apart from it being for a good cause; I knew I could run a mile; I knew I could run 3; but 6? Well, I wasn't quite sure and this way I would find out.

I had persuaded a few of the guys from work to join in and they were all there with me in the cold and the damp... unfortunately, as well as the horrible weather, our second fear also came true!!

The Sport Relief website had said that the mile(s) would start and end on the athletics track - but it didn't say that the middle would be on it as well! We were hoping for variety, one long route with fields, trees, grass, maybe a few deer - well maybe not the deer - but at least not just round and round and round.

The 1 milers were ok, they had to go round the track 4 times and there were enough of them to feel supported in their efforts, but for the 3 and 6 milers, it was 13 and 25(!!!) laps respectively! Now I quite like running; it's a time to relax my mind a little, to let my thoughts float around and generally switch off - but how on earth could I switch off when I had to count each bloomin lap!? Really makes me wish I'd invested in a new Nano and the Nike+ Sports kit... a nice voice would have just reported my distance and I could have run without concern for the trivial matter of how far I'd gone. Never mind.

Well on the 24th lap, the guys left supporting me thrust a bottle of water in my hand and after a few sips, I think I almost lost it - a change of rhythm in my step I suppose - so on the last lap, I gave them back my water and my hat and set off for the finish line (that I'd just passed!!). The wind was relentless on the first bend and I felt like I was running on the spot, but Jake had joined me and was keeping me going... little did I know that he and Jon had devised some crazy plan about a sprint finish.

I suppose luckily, or unluckily, for them, depending how you look at it, I'd already decided to finish with a bang and really stretch out my legs, though I'm positive Jake let up in those last few yards. I'll let you make your own mind up.

There's still time to sponsor me.
